WKMG-TV out of Orlando, FL reported late last night that Urban Meyer is coming to Ohio State. It's a done deal. The report was that he has not officially signed, but has agreed to a deal that would pay him $40 million over a period of 7 years. That's more than even Jim Tressel could have imagined. The deal includes specific assistant coaches who were with him at Florida. (If true we can hope that it at least includes a new offensive coordinator) Meyer was to sign officially after the Michigan game.
The report was widely circulated, but was never confirmed. It's suspicious that a news station like WBNS-TV, a local station in Columbus, had to rely on a report out of Florida for information about Ohio State. With all of the sources that they have around the University, you'd think that they would be able to get the scoop on a news outlet a thousand miles away. Well, maybe the outfit in Florida didn't get it quite right.
Later this morning Urban Meyer came out and, once again, announced that there is no deal.
So what's going on here? Is there a real deal or not? In some respects this seems to be the tail wagging the dog. It's very reminiscent of the campaign in Florida that ousted then head coach Ron Zook in order to bring back Steve Spurrier. Of course, Spurrier didn't want the job and went to South Carolina instead. This opened the door for Meyer to take the Florida job. Of course, there's no worry about ousting an existing coach at Ohio State. Or is there? Maybe there's a contingent of people who don't want Fickell to remain the head coach, so they're starting this campaign of rumors hoping it will come true.
There is another possibility.
It's Michigan week, and some people will do anything to see Michigan win this next game – including the starting of rumors that will be a disruption for the Buckeyes. What could be more distracting to a team of struggling players than the additional rumors of coaching changes. This all could be a plot to help Michigan win… or it could be that there really is an offer for Meyer that will be announced sometime around 3:30 p.m. on Saturday. Which is true?
Stay Tuned.
